Halal 101

Everything you might want to know about how our meat is raised, certified, and hand-cut to order.

What does “halal” mean?

Halal means permissible under Islamic law. For meat, it requires the animal to be healthy, humanely treated, and slaughtered by a trained Muslim using a swift cut that invokes the name of God, with the blood fully drained.

What is zabiha (hand-slaughter)?

Zabiha is the traditional hand-slaughter method Islamic law requires — done by hand, not by mechanical blade, with the animal facing Mecca. All meat at Orange Grove Market is 100% hand-zabiha.

Is Orange Grove Market certified halal?

Yes. We're certified by HMS — Halal Monitoring Services, a service of the Shariah Board of America — as a hand-zabiha slaughterhouse and distributor, certified November 22, 2024.

Where does your meat come from?

Our owner raises animals on his own farm in Alpaugh, CA — true farm-to-counter, hand-zabiha halal.

Can I ask for a specific cut, trim, or weight?

Yes — our butchers cut and pack to order. Ask for a specific trim, thickness, or package size at the counter, or note it when you order online.

Do you accept SNAP/EBT?

Yes, in-store. We're working on adding SNAP/EBT for online orders — check back or call us at (562) 360-8011 for the latest.
